N is for Nursing

Come on….you knew that N would be something to do with nursing, didnt you?

What a good time to talk about what I want out of my nursing career. I have spent many years bouncing around to the different departments of medicine, and working back office in them. That has given me the chance to explore my areas of interest.

I dont particularly care for primary care. I understand the importance of it, but it is incredibly mundane.

I loved OB/GYN, and could see working there or Labor and Delivery. The birthing process from conception through delivery is amazing.

I love the ER. I cant get enough of it. (maybe that will change) I love the shifts, I love working nights, I love the comraderie, and even the action! I just love the ER.

So basically… first choice ER, second choice L&D, third choice Urgent Care.

Can you tell that I’m excited?

Yay!! I would add another on your possibilities list. ICU. It’s what I did for 6 years and it was time SO well invested. Patient load is low (1-3 usually), scope of practice is huge, and you get the really sick ones, AFTER they clear the ER. There are nights of wild non-stop action, and there are kick up your feet and read a book (or learn something new) nights. And seriously, ICU experience is a resume plus plus plus. It’ll take you anywhere in nursing that you want to go.

I think with your smarts and your drive, it would be a perfect place for you. And if you decide you want an ICU specialty, pick what you want: neuro, cardio, surg, neonatal, peds, and so on. I surely think you would love it.

And yes, I think you could read the Palahnuik book in 5 weeks. You could probably read it in 5 days if you have the time!
